A front-facing face mesh cannot see a 90° profile, so this tool does not use one. It runs an on-device person segmenter, takes the outline of your head from the nose side, and walks that outline to find the classic soft-tissue points: the brow point (glabella), nose root (nasion), nose tip (pronasale), the point under the nose (subnasale), the upper and lower lip, the fold between lip and chin, and the chin (pogonion). From those it computes the angles used in orthodontic and facial-surgery profile assessment and draws every one of them on your photo, so you can check the points yourself.
The result is a description of your silhouette against published adult reference ranges. It is not a clinical cephalometric measurement (those need a radiograph and bony landmarks) and it is not an attractiveness verdict: every reference band has widely admired faces outside it.
Five relationships describe most of what people mean by a "good" or "weak" side profile. The bands below are the ranges the literature reports for adults - descriptive norms from measured populations, which differ by sex and ancestry, not targets.
How far the profile bends at the base of the nose, measured between the brow point, the point under the nose and the chin.
Higher: A more convex profile: the chin sits further back relative to the forehead and nose base.
Lower: A flatter or slightly concave profile: forehead, nose base and chin line up closely.
The angle at the nose root between the brow and the nose tip - how sharply the forehead turns into the nose.
Higher: A shallower transition; the nose root sits closer to the forehead line.
Lower: A sharper brow-to-nose turn, which reads as a more prominent brow or higher nose root.
The angle under the nose between the tip and the upper lip - the standard read of nose-tip rotation.
Higher: An upturned tip, more nostril visible from the side.
Lower: A downturned or drooping tip.
The fold between lower lip and chin. Deep folds read as a strong chin or full lower lip; shallow ones as lip and chin in one plane.
Higher: A shallow fold - lower lip and chin sit nearly in line.
Lower: A deep fold - a pronounced chin relative to the lower lip.
A line from nose tip to chin; the lips are read as behind, on or ahead of it. Population means differ, so the band is wide.
Higher: Lips ahead of the line - fuller or more forward lips, or a shorter nose or chin.
Lower: Lips well behind the line - a longer nose or stronger chin relative to the lips.
Most named nose shapes are side-view descriptions of two things: the line of the bridge between nose root and tip, and how the tip is rotated. The tool measures both. A bridge that bows forward of the root-to-tip line is convex (aquiline); one that dips behind it is concave (scooped); within a few percent of the line it is straight. Tip rotation comes from the nasolabial angle: above about 110° reads as upturned (celestial, or snub when combined with a concave bridge), below about 90° as downturned (a hawk profile when the bridge is also convex). These are art-history descriptions of geometry - the tool never infers ancestry, and no type is "better".

Not one that holds up. Phi-based profile claims (nose length to chin height, forehead to nose, the "golden" profile mask) inherit the problems of the front-view phi mask: a poor fit to real faces and no demonstrated link to what people actually prefer. Profile assessment in practice uses angles and line relationships - convexity, the nasofrontal and nasolabial angles, the E-line - because those describe how the forehead, nose, lips and chin sit relative to each other regardless of overall size. A true 90° turn
Turn until only one eye would be visible to the camera and your nose tip clears your cheek. Three-quarter angles compress the nose and chin, so the tool refuses them rather than guessing.
Camera at ear height
Hold the phone level with your ear at arm's length or further. Shooting from above shortens the chin; from below it lengthens it.
Plain, contrasting background
A wall that is clearly lighter or darker than your skin and hair gives a crisp outline. Busy backgrounds and backlit windows blur the edge the measurement depends on.
Hair off the forehead, lips relaxed
A fringe over the brow moves the nose-root points; glasses hide the bridge. Close your lips gently without pressing - a smile or tension shifts the lip and chin points.
There is no single good side profile. Orthodontic and facial-surgery references describe a typical adult pattern - a gently convex profile with a facial convexity of roughly 8–16°, a nasolabial angle around 90–115° and lips sitting slightly behind the nose-tip-to-chin line - but these are descriptive ranges from measured populations, not ideals, and widely admired faces sit outside every one of them. This tool reports where your silhouette falls against those reference ranges; it is not a verdict on attractiveness.
It traces the outline of your head from a 90° photo in your browser, finds the standard soft-tissue points on that outline (brow point, nose root, nose tip, the point under the nose, both lips, the lip-chin fold and the chin), and draws the angles clinicians use between them. The balance number is simply how many of those measurements fall inside their commonly cited reference band - 100 means all of them do. It is a geometry summary from one photo, not a clinical cephalometric measurement, which requires an X-ray and bony landmarks.
No validated one. The 1.618 claims made about side profiles - nose length to chin, forehead to nose - come from the same phi-mask tradition that formal reviews have found does not describe real preferences or real faces well. The measurements that are actually used to describe a profile are angles and line relationships: facial convexity, the nasofrontal and nasolabial angles, and the position of the lips relative to the E-line. Those are what this tool measures.
Most references place the adult nasolabial angle between about 90° and 115°, with reported means lower for men (a tip closer to 90–95°) and higher for women (closer to 100–110°). Below the band the tip reads as drooping; above it the tip reads as upturned with more nostril visible from the side. Population studies differ by several degrees, so treat the band as a guide, not a threshold.
Ricketts' E-line runs from the nose tip to the chin. On average adults, the upper lip sits about 4 mm behind it and the lower lip about 2 mm behind it. Lips ahead of the line read as full or forward; lips well behind it usually mean a longer nose or a more forward chin rather than thin lips. Means differ across populations and the line moves with any change in nose or chin, so it is a relationship, not a lip measurement on its own.
It measures the two things people usually mean by that: the facial convexity angle (a chin set back relative to the forehead and nose base raises it) and the fold between lower lip and chin. A high convexity value with a shallow fold is the pattern often described as a recessed chin. That is a description of soft-tissue geometry in one photo - jaw position, bite and airway questions belong to an orthodontist or maxillofacial specialist, and this is not a diagnosis.
There is no peer-reviewed evidence that tongue posture changes adult jaw position or the profile angles measured here. What does move the silhouette: head posture (a forward head noticeably weakens the chin line in photos), body-fat level under the chin and along the jaw, and beard styling. Usually because the turn was short of 90°, so both sides of the face bulged about equally and no honest profile could be traced, or because hair, a collar, glasses or a busy background hid part of the outline.
